Guts UK¶
The only UK charity retrieved this session that funds digestive-disease research and publishes IBS-specific patient information. Its own framing describes IBS as a disorder of gut–brain interaction with a communication fault between gut and brain, aligning the patient-facing language with the Rome IV/V nosology (diagnosis-and-rome-criteria). Its IBS page acknowledges the access problem for behavioural treatment directly, noting such services "can be difficult to access with long waiting times" — which matches the wiki's finding that brain–gut behavioural therapy has the largest effect sizes and the worst availability (psychological-therapy). The IBS Network — and a link-rot warning¶
The IBS Network historically operated as a registered UK charity (Charity Commission number 1173208) with a stated mission to inform, support and advise people with IBS and to work alongside health professionals to facilitate self-management. Historical materials describe an IBS Self Care Programme, a health-professional helpline, symptom tracker, the quarterly magazine Gut Reaction, "can't wait" cards and self-help groups. The live Charity Commission record now labels number 1173208 "Removed charity" (Charity Commission — "The IBS Network — 1173208", https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/en/charity-search/-/charity-details/5093293, accessed 2026-09-02), so these services must not be presented as currently available.
However: on 2026-09-02, an automated retrieval of https://www.theibsnetwork.org/ and https://www.theibsnetwork.org/about-us/ returned unrelated commercial content with no IBS support material. This is recorded deliberately: reproducing the old URL would misdirect patients. No successor organisation or current live address was established, and this entry must not be used for current signposting.
IBS Patient Support Group¶
Traces its origin to 1995 as IBSgroup.org, "the first internet IBS patient community website", relaunched under the current name in 2016 as, in its own words, "a public education advocacy community for sufferers". Describes itself as a privately held not-for-profit community, self-funded by its founder Jeffrey Roberts (named here as a public organisational figure on the organisation's own page) and supplemented by limited advertising and affiliate links — a funding model worth recording alongside the content. IFFGD's own pages state a mission "to inform, assist, and support people affected by gastrointestinal (GI) disorders", founded in 1991 by one person living with a chronic GI disorder, and constituted as a US 501(c)(3) public charity that also funds research. It operates condition-specific patient sites, of which aboutibs.org is the IBS one. Both iffgd.org and aboutibs.org returned HTTP 403 to automated retrieval on 2026-09-02, so this entry rests on search-result excerpts from the organisation's own pages rather than on direct retrieval, and is flagged accordingly.
Gastrointestinal Society / CSIR (Canada)¶
CSIR was founded in 1976 and describes itself as the first registered Canadian charity established to raise public awareness of gastrointestinal disease through patient and professional information and research funding; the Gastrointestinal Society was formed on that foundation in 2008, with the GI Society serving Canada nationally and CSIR serving British Columbia. Self-describes (paraphrased from Dutch) as providing reliable information about a complex intestinal condition and connecting people with others who share the experience. Offers the most operationally practical toolkit of any organisation retrieved: an online symptom self-assessment, a treatment decision-support tool, regional meetings, a podcast, and a members' toilet pass. Rome Foundation¶
Not a patient organisation in the membership sense, but included because it defines the diagnostic criteria that determine who has IBS, and because it maintains genuinely patient-facing material: an educational video library, patient Q&A resources, and the GastroPsych directory for finding behavioural-health clinicians — a direct response to the access gap in psychological-therapy. Gaps in this directory¶
- No patient organisation was retrieved from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East or Oceania in the web-directory search run 2026-09-02. This is a scoped gap in the directory, not a claim that none exists; IBS prevalence is measured across all of these regions (Oka 2020, PMID 32702295; Takeoka 2023, PMID 37019867).
- No pan-European patient federation for IBS or DGBI was retrievable this session (searched 2026-09-02).
